· Kidney Cancer: Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC)
Kidney Cancer: Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC). The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 28,000 new cases of renal cell carcinoma will be detected in 1998. It is further estimated that over 11,000 deaths will result from this form of kidney cancer. Neither chemotherapy nor radiation therapy have been shown to be effective against renal cell carcinoma that has spread beyond the kidney (metastatic). Thus, the early detection of these cancers, which are generally incurable except by surgical means, should translate into improvements in survival due to earlier operative intervention at a potentially curable state.

Surgical Management of Renal Cell Cancer
Surgery is always utilized for the treatment of patients with renal cell cancer unless patients are too ill to survive the procedure. Currently, most physicians think that the primary cancer should be removed even when there is metastatic cancer present at diagnosis. In patients with stage I and II renal cell cancer, surgery alone is curative for the majority of patients. For patients with stage III renal cell cancer surgery can be curative depending on the extent of disease. Surgical removal of some metastatic cancers can also be curative. Surgery can play a major role in the relief of symptoms caused by the cancer in patients with stage III and IV renal cell cancer and in those with recurrent disease. There also is the general concept that immunotherapy will work better if as much cancer as possible is removed before treatment. There are several surgical approaches that are utilized depending on the extent of disease and the condition of the patient.
